About

Why this site exists and how it is run.

2048 Online is a website for playing the 2048 sliding-tile puzzle in a browser. It is designed, developed and owned by Aiknot, and this page explains what it is for, how it works and how it stays honest.

Who is behind it

2048 Online is designed and developed by Aiknot, which also owns and runs the site. Aiknot is responsible for the game, the guides, the design and the advertising on this site, and is the one to contact about any of them through the contact page.

Why it exists

2048 is one of the best small games ever made, and yet most places to play it are crowded with pop-ups, forced sign-ups or boards that do not fit your screen. This site was built to be the opposite: open the page and the board is there, sized to fit whatever device you are holding, with nothing between you and the first move.

Beyond that, the aim is to be useful to people who want to get better at the game. That is why there are written guides as well as a board: the rules, a full strategy guide, a guide to playing past 2048, notes on board sizes and a short history of the game.

What makes this version different

How the game is built

The game is written in TypeScript with no framework. The rules live in a small engine that is separate from everything you see, which makes them easy to test: the engine has its own automated tests covering merging, scoring, spawning, winning and losing, and the project’s automated checks run them on every change. The page itself is static, so it is quick to load and has no server of its own to go wrong.

Your saved game, best scores and settings are kept in your own browser. There are no accounts and no database. If you want to know exactly what is stored and what leaves your device, the privacy policy sets it out.

How the guides are written and kept accurate

The guides on this site are written by hand, for people who want to improve, and the advice in them is the kind that can be checked: you can try it on the board in front of you and see whether it works. Where something is a matter of opinion, such as which size of board is best to learn on, the guides say so.

Each guide carries a “last reviewed” date at the bottom. When a mistake is found, or the game changes in a way that makes a guide out of date, the page is corrected and the change is noted in the changelog on the home page. If you spot something that is wrong, please say so.

Credit where it is due

The 2048 puzzle was created by Gabriele Cirulli in 2014, building on earlier games such as Threes and 1024; the history page tells the story. This site is an independent re-implementation with its own code, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the original author.

How the site pays for itself

Playing is free, and it stays that way. The site is funded by advertising from Google AdSense, which appears below the game and the guides, never on top of the board where it could be tapped by accident. Ads are clearly labelled, and the game is designed so that it works whether or not they load. The privacy policy explains the cookies involved and how to switch off personalised ads.
